Norwalk Hospital has opened a new Cohen Pediatric Emergency Center, expanding access to specialized pediatric health care for families across Connecticut’s greater Norwalk region. The new center was made possible through a $1.74 million grant from the Steven & Alexandra Cohen Foundation and reflects a growing investment in child-focused emergency services.

Located at Northwell Health’s Norwalk Hospital, the center includes seven newly remodeled pediatric emergency rooms designed specifically around the needs of children. The funding also supported new pediatric equipment and expanded behavioral health resources, including a Child Life Specialist who helps young patients and their caregivers manage fear and anxiety through therapeutic play, education, and reassurance.

The space was designed to improve the overall health care experience for families. A kid-friendly waiting area features toys, books, and a fish tank, while each emergency room includes a marine-themed mural created in collaboration with the Maritime Aquarium in Norwalk to help children feel more comfortable during emergency visits.

“The opening of the Cohen Pediatric Emergency Center marks a transformative moment for Norwalk Hospital and the families we serve,” said Norwalk Hospital President Peter R. Cordeau. “This center brings world-class pediatric emergency care closer to home, ensuring children in our community receive the highest level of specialized treatment in moments when it matters most.”

The center will also care for children needing short observation stays for conditions such as asthma, croup, and dehydration. Families in southwestern Fairfield County now have access to more than 20 pediatric specialties through Connecticut Children’s for follow-up care when needed.
