A group of 32 U.S. senators, led by Chris Murphy and Richard Blumenthal, is calling on the Trump administration to halt any proposed cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. In a letter addressed to President Trump, lawmakers strongly opposed using these essential healthcare programs to fund tax cuts for billionaires.
The senators’ concerns follow reports that Elon Musk and officials from the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) have accessed key payment and contracting systems at the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS). This access has raised alarms over potential disruptions to the programs that serve millions of Americans.
In 2024, Medicare provided healthcare to 68 million seniors and people with disabilities, while Medicaid served nearly 80 million Americans, making it the country’s largest public health insurance program. The lawmakers warned that any cuts would increase costs, delay care, and put hospitals and healthcare workers at risk.
“We write to say no to Elon Musk and DOGE and demand hands off Medicare or Medicaid,” the letter stated. The senators also accused the administration of shutting down Medicaid portals, disrupting healthcare communication, and delaying critical funding.
They urged President Trump to stop what they call a “lawless approach” that could endanger millions of lives.
This bipartisan effort reflects growing concerns over healthcare accessibility and government oversight.
