Hartford’s Saint Francis Hospital Named Among America’s 50 Best for Outpatient Joint Replacement

October 27, 2026

Saint Francis Hospital in Hartford announced it has been named one of America’s 50 Best for Outpatient Joint Replacement by Healthgrades, a hospital and physician rating service.

The hospital also received Excellence Awards for Outpatient Joint Replacement and Outpatient Orthopedic Surgery, placing it among the nation’s top 5 percent in those specialties. Saint Francis earned five-star ratings for outpatient total knee replacement and outpatient total hip replacement.

Saint Francis said the results place it in the top tier of U.S. hospitals for outpatient care and reflect its commitment to clinical outcomes for patients undergoing outpatient orthopedic procedures. Robert Roose, MD, MPH, president of acute care at Trinity Health Of New England, said: “We are incredibly proud to once again be recognized by Healthgrades for the outstanding care our orthopedic team provides to our community. To consistently be identified among the top hospitals across the country for outpatient joint replacement underscores our commitment to safety, quality, and Mission-based care.”

A Healthgrades analysis found that patients treated at hospitals with nationally recognized outpatient programs had better outcomes than those treated at hospitals without that recognition. Healthgrades estimates that 36,628 complications could have been avoided if all hospitals had performed at the level of five-star-rated facilities during the 2023-25 study period.

“For patients in search of quality care beyond the four walls of the hospital, finding an outpatient program that excels in their procedure can transform their health trajectory,” said Alana Biggers, MD, MPH, medical advisor at Healthgrades, “We’re proud to recognize Saint Francis Hospital for its top-tier performance in outpatient orthopedic surgery and commend its team for delivering exceptional patient outcomes when and where it matters most.”

Healthgrades says it bases its ratings on objective clinical outcomes rather than surveys or reputation. It evaluates hospitals nationwide that provide outpatient orthopedic procedures, using risk-adjusted mortality and complication rates.
