Congressman Joe Courtney (CT-02) is pressing federal lawmakers to act on extending critical health care tax credits before they expire on January 1, 2026, credits that help tens of thousands of Connecticut residents afford health insurance coverage.

On December 19, 2025, Rep. Courtney released a statement after a House discharge petition to force a vote on a three-year extension of the Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits reached the necessary 218 signatures. He had signed the petition on November 12 and has been a vocal advocate for protecting access to affordable health care.

“On November 12th I joined 214 House members to sign a discharge petition that is the last best hope for 22 million Americans who are about to get hit with skyrocketing health insurance premiums,” said Courtney. “The decision by four additional members to sign on, sets up a vote in the House on this measure that Speaker Johnson has willfully obstructed for months. The vote will be a defining moment for a Congress that has turned a deaf ear to pleas of working families, the middle class, and small businesses who will be condemned to losing affordable health insurance.”

Access Health CT estimates that 142,000 Connecticut residents could face higher health costs if the credits are not extended.
