Cigna Study Finds Strong Purpose Boosts Health, Lowers Burnout

New research from Bloomfield's Cigna Group highlights the powerful link between purpose and health. According to the 2025 Vitality in America report, adults with a strong sense of purpose experience significantly better physical and mental health, stronger relationships, and greater workplace engagement.

Despite these benefits, fewer than one in three Americans report having a strong sense of purpose. The research finds that people without purpose are up to three times more likely to feel depressed, less energized, and disconnected from meaningful relationships. These individuals are also less likely to engage in healthy behaviors, such as annual physicals or getting enough rest.

“Having a sense of purpose gives people energy and helps them feel happier and healthier,” said Stuart Lustig, MD, national medical executive for behavioral strategy and product design, Cigna Healthcare. “When you know what matters to you, you're more likely to bounce back from tough times, build strong friendships, and take care of yourself, doing things like eating well, staying active, and getting enough rest, all which impact your overall physical health.”

Workplace impacts are also clear: employees without purpose are more likely to experience burnout and disengagement. Those with strong purpose show resilience, stronger performance, and lower rates of absenteeism.

“Like vitality, purpose is attainable for everyone, and it's a powerful tool for living your best and healthiest life,” added Lustig.
