Teamsters Local 671 Workers at i-Health Strike Back Against Unfair Labor Practices

A group of 20 workers at i-Health, Inc., a DSM-Firmenich-owned company, have taken to the picket lines to protest an assault on their rights and livelihoods. These workers, members of Teamsters Local 671, have been left with no choice but to strike after months of the company’s refusal to bargain in good faith and repeated unfair labor practices.

The situation escalated dramatically this week when, after just two days on strike, i-Health fired 11 full-time workers and one temporary worker. Union representatives argue these terminations were unjust and retaliatory, violating the workers’ legal protections under labor laws.

Unreasonable Demands and Retaliation

The workers at i-Health play a crucial role in processing and distributing products shipped to major retailers across the country and globally. Their contributions are pivotal to the company’s operations, yet they report being subjected to unreasonable demands, including 12-hour shifts, six days a week. In March, these employees voted to join Teamsters Local 671, seeking improved health care benefits and protections against such grueling schedules.

Despite their efforts to secure fair treatment, the company has resisted negotiating fairly, the union claims. Instead, i-Health responded to the workers’ strike with abrupt terminations, delivered via text message, further fueling tensions.

A Call for Accountability

The union has called on DSM-Firmenich, the Switzerland-based parent company of i-Health, to address these actions. In a letter to DSM-Firmenich leadership, union representatives outlined how the company’s actions violate its own Code of Business Ethics, which emphasizes respect for human rights, support for union rights, and a zero-tolerance policy for retaliation.

“DSM-Firmenich’s own Code of Business Ethics commits to treating employees with dignity and respect,” the letter stated. “But the firing of striking workers contradicts these values and raises significant ethical and legal concerns.”

The union has demanded the immediate reinstatement of terminated employees, a commitment to good-faith negotiations, and an independent investigation into the company’s labor practices. They have also urged DSM-Firmenich to publicly reaffirm its commitment to its ethical principles and ensure future compliance.

The Bigger Picture

For the workers, this fight goes beyond the picket line. It’s about securing a better future for themselves and their families.  Further, the dispute at i-Health has captured attention beyond Enfield. The outcome will not only impact the workers on the picket line but also set a precedent for how corporations balance labor rights with operational demands. The union has vowed to continue highlighting this issue nationally, urging DSM-Firmenich to act swiftly and restore trust.

As the strike continues, the workers of Teamsters Local 671 remain resolute. Their message is clear: they will not back down until fairness is restored.  Learn more about Teamsters Local 671’s efforts at i-Health:
